WordPress 3.3 Release Update Review

This has been a big and large update for all WordPress fans out there. The features are really nice and the back end for the admin sections is super clean while being sleekkkkkk. The new media uploader is so much less complicated and easier to use now. The WordPress team combined all the buttons into one powerful uploading machine.

The front end admin features are a delight as well to look at. Hopefully I wont have to change too many things around as far as themes. But so far everything looks good! I am really enjoying this new update.

Anyone else have any thoughts about the new update?

The Truth About Domain Name Hacks

A domain hack (also known as domain name hacks) is a way many people and companies are choosing to stake their place on the internet these days. This began due to a shortage of traditional named domain names that were easy to remember.

As time passed people began to realize that extremely brand able domain names could be created by using the extension as part of the word. Famous sites such as blo.gs, del.icio.us, retou.ch, bit.ly and goo.gl created the path for more creative domain hacks to come.

Popular domain name extensions that are used for domain hacks are .al, .as, .it, .me, .im, .us, .ly. In actuality any type of domain extensions can be used to create a new awesome domain name. I myself am now using the .im to domain hack my own name “Hara Kim” to create HaraK.im.

One thing some people concern themselves with is that users will get confused if they use a domain hack and will not be able to find the site. However with some research I found that most natural traffic comes through search engines and that more and more people are becoming internet savvy therefore they use tools such as bookmarks which allow them to visit your site instantly without remember the original domain name.

Overall I feel you won’t lose much traffic if at all and believe that domain hacks are becoming more and more popular and useful for the internet as a whole. If you want to search for some of your own domain hacks I recommend using http://xona.com/domainhacks/ it is completely free as well.

I have used Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird in the past to manage all my email accounts. I have over 10 email addresses which I use for various things online so for me it is important to have a email provider/software that meets my needs.

I like to have one central location to view all my email accounts and to keep track of things. I used Thunderbird the longest and it worked great but I felt like something was missing. I wanted to check my email from any where I was.

This is when I started to look at Gmail as I already had an email account there. Gmail has probably had this service for a while but I just recently noticed it. You are able to add email addresses from other providers and have Gmail retrieve your emails. I found this REALLY great! Basically it provides you with a similar service to Thunderbird and Outlook.

The best thing of all is anywhere you have internet connection whether it’s at home or a public location you can check all your email accounts by just logging in. All you do is create an account and go to the “Settings” there you can find very easy options to add your extra email addresses. I found Gmail to be an incredible resource if you want to check them out go to Gmail.com.

There are thousands of Drupal themes available on the web. You can get most of them for free on Drupal.org but there are professional designers that offer premium themes at reasonable prices. Also when you purchase a premium theme it usually includes one on one support.

1. ThemeForest.net is known for html and WordPress themes. However they carry some very nice premium Drupal themes as well. They are definitely worth checking out. Themeforest is also known for having great prices.

2. TemplateMonster.com has over 427 Drupal themes mainly ranging from $40-$60. You also have the choice of purchasing a unique theme from them for a hefty price.

3. TopNotchThemes offers 32 Drupal templates that is backed by a fantastic support team. Each theme is very customizable and is worth every penny.

4. Themestock.com is a membership based theme club. Currently they have over 58 templates for Drupal based websites.

Outsource to a Freelancer or Web Development Company?

When running an online business or website these days most people can get a site or product created for them at a reasonable cost. The real question is who do hire.

Personally I have used both freelancer’s and software development companies whether it was for design, php or html coding, or any other thing I needed done. I found a few things to be true and false about each of the two options.

Freelancers Advantages

Can easily find reviews on the freelance marketplaces.
Services are generally much cheaper in almost all aspects.
Money is usually safe with escrow type services provided by freelance websites.
Most freelancers like what they are doing therefore will work hard to see the goals of your project to be seen through.

Freelancer Disadvantages

You are relying on one person to do the work without chain of command. Therefore if problems arise it could be much worse then if working with a entire company.
Limited flexibility again because you are working with one person. Always make sure you extensively review the freelancers past works.

Web Development Company Advantages

You are dealing with multiple people which can bring new prospective to your project.
Usually your experience will be more professional
If you don’t like the work of one person at the company another team member could possibly take over the project.
The possibility of faster response time to your problems and concerns.

Web Development Company disadvantages

Generally higher prices than freelancers.
Time frame may be longer due to more clients being handled at a time.
Risk of wasting time and money as most companies won’t be using escrow services for payment.
Chances to be billed by the hour.
Fixes or Additional work will cost more money.

It is really hard to recommend either one as you can see both have there advantages and disadvantages. It really depends on the project at hand and what your budget is. You should always check out both options and make sure that the freelancer or company you are planning to work with has a good portfolio and great references. Otherwise you will be wasting your time and Time = Money!
